10th Anniversary Celebration
On Wednesday 14th July 2010, HAY and the Hanworth Centre celebrated their 10th anniversary with a Fun Day at the Centre. All the children, young people and families who use the Centre, as well as the local community, representatives from the London Borough of Hounslow and the charity’s trustees and supporters took part in the fun, which included face painting, urban art, storytelling, close up magic, badge making and henna decoration. Music and live African drumming added to the party atmosphere, while Caribbean food, cakes made by the children and a barbecue expertly managed by the Hanworth Centre’s very own chef-to-be, Denny Talbot, were provided. A wonderful anniversary cake was ceremonially cut by Louise Kaye, founder of HAY, assisted by Liz Cooper who is retiring from the HAY committee after 10 years service.
From the dilapidated building of 10 years ago, the Hanworth Centre has become a welcoming and vibrant community centre, demonstrated by the buzz of nearly 300 people joining the celebrations at its 10th anniversary party! Thank you to everyone who came and to all the generous and talented individuals who gave their time, skills and energy which made the event so successful. And here’s to the next 10 years!
The HAY AGM took place at the Hanworth Centre on September 16th 2009. Many people attended, including stakeholders and funders, and young people from the JYIP entertained the guests by performing a fantastic dance which was a tribute to Michael Jackson. Many other young people helped to make this a successful afternoon by welconming and talking to the guests about the projects they have been involved in and by helping to serve the delicious tea and showing people round the Centre.
The Hanworth Centre has hosted a number of crime prevention events recently. Senior Youth Worker, Andy Clarke, has ensured that these events have been a great success and that many young people have had extremely positive reactions.
Mutah Beale, formerly known as “Napoleon” from Tupac Shakur’s “Outlaws”, visited the centre from America to talk to young people about life in a gang. Issues such as knife crime, gun crime and gang related activities were discussed. Barrington Foster has also been to the centre to discuss knife crime and how prison affects you. With first hand experience young people really sit up and listen taking on board all that they hear.
Feedback was excellent with over 95% of the people at the event requesting more crime prevention events.
Starbucks Coffee:
Have donated a brand new pool table for the centre, along with coffees and teas for the centre when we put on events and fun days. A big thank you to them, and we look forward to their continued support.
Starbucks will be hosting a presentation evening in one of their coffee shops for the young people who took part in the table tennis tournament. Trophies will be presented to the top three players along with table tennis bats to encourage them to keep playing. The standard of the tournament has been so high that we hope our young people may even try for the 2012 Olympics.
Summer Activities:
Over the summer period the centre had 5 weeks of activities, advice and guidance for young people. Partnerships with Extended Schools, Youth Services, Drug and Alcohol agencies, Met Police and Connexions meant that a wide variety of activities and workshops were available
Fun Days:
A number of fun days for the local community have been warmly received. Local children and families have been entertained with basketball and football skills on display, activities for all ages, painting workshops, art workshops, sports and other fun events
British Airways:
British Airways have donated £6,000 for the JYIP project. The donation will extend the project by a further 8 weeks and will be used for activities and trips. The Mercer's Charitable foundation awarded the Junior Youth Club £2,500 to go towards residential and off site activities. The Thames Community Foundation have also awarded the Junior Youth Club £2,000 to go towards staff training. We would like to thank all those that have awarded monies and for their continuing support.
The Hanworth Centre held a celebration event on 25 September:
To celebrate the start of our 8th year, we held an open afternoon on 25 September. It was an opportunity for funders, Councillors and Council officers to meet the young people, youth workers, agency representatives and community groups that use the Centre.
Judith Pettersen, Head of Children's Services and Lifelong Learning spoke in support of the wide variety of programmes we run and Denis Dunstone, representing one of the trusts which helps to fund us, told us about how even though his son had done quite badly at school, in true entrepreneurial style started what then became the Carphone Warehouse by selling early mobile phones out of a suitcase on the street!
Many of the Junior Club members helped out by serving tea and cakes they had prepared for the event. They also proved to be excellent guides, showing guests around the building. One our our Senior Club members, Billy, entertained us with a rap he had written, which contained a serious message about how he learned to make good choices in life, after making mistakes in the past. There was a moving speech from one of the mothers, saying how the Junior Youth Inclusion Project had changed her son's life and how much happier and easier he is to live with now.
Altogether it was a successful afternoon, enjoyed by all.
